Open questions in matter & phase space

The Only Three Questions Left

Everything we do not yet know about matter in this universe can be folded into three unresolved, cosmic-scale questions about phase, pressure, and the breakdown of classical rules.

Phase diagrams at the edge
Triple points & critical lines
Quantum & astrophysical limits

The only three major unanswered questions
Question 01

What is matter's full phase diagram at extreme pressure and temperature?

Biggest gap in our knowledge

We still cannot fully map the landscape where matter moves between:

  • solids ? liquids ? plasmas ? exotic quantum phases
  • the total number of phases that actually exist
  • where every phase boundary intersects
  • whether exotic substances have new kinds of triple or critical intersections

This applies directly to:

Metallic hydrogen Ultra-compressed water Carbon at mantle pressures Iron in super-Earth cores

This is the largest open map in the thermodynamics of the universe.

Question 02

What happens when classical thermodynamics breaks down?

Where "solid-liquid-gas" stops working

At extremes, the familiar rules- "solid, liquid, gas", Gibbs equalities, even triple points- may simply fail.

Key unknown regimes include:

  • Quantum critical points
  • Electron-degenerate matter
  • Neutron-rich crusts in neutron stars
  • Quark-gluon phases and beyond

We do not yet know whether these regimes host the equivalents of triple or critical points, or whether they obey entirely new organising principles.

Question 03

What are the phase properties of non-bulk elements?

The unreachable corner of the periodic table

For most superheavy elements (Z > 100), we cannot even define ordinary thermodynamic constants. We can only make them a few atoms at a time.

Unknown for these elements:

  • Triple points
  • Melting curves
  • Critical points
  • Vaporisation behaviour

Their phase diagrams remain completely uncharted, even though they sit at the far end of the periodic table.

Everything unresolved collapses into three

Every open question about phases, triple points, criticality, or exotic matter sits somewhere inside this three-question framework.
